Why do I need a chair mat?

An ES ROBBINS chair mat protects your carpet or hard floors from damage caused by office chair casters (wheels) while making it easier to move around your workspace. Without a chair mat, repeated rolling chair movement can wear down carpet fibers, leave indentations, scratch hardwood floors, and damage laminate, vinyl, or tile surfaces.

ES ROBBINS chair mats provide a smooth, durable surface that reduces muscle strain when moving your rolling chair and helps preserve the appearance and lifespan of your flooring. Whether you work from home, have a corporate office, craft and sewing area, or use a gaming setup, an ES ROBBINS chair mat is a simple way to protect your flooring investment and improve your mobility and comfort.

What are the benefits of using a chair mat?

The primary benefits of an ES ROBBINS chair mat include floor protection, improved mobility, increased ergonomic comfort, and long-term cost savings by extending the lifespan of your floors.

An ES ROBBINS chair mat helps:

  • Protect carpet or hard floors from damage
  • Prevent carpet wear, snags, and fiber damage
  • Minimize scratches and scuffs on hard floors
  • Shield carpet or hard floors from spills and stains
  • Extend the life of your flooring
  • Reduce flooring replacement and repair costs
  • Improve workspace ergonomics
  • Allow office chairs to roll more smoothly
  • Reduce strain on legs and back

For many users, an ES ROBBINS chair mat is a minor investment that quickly pays for itself by preventing costly floor damage and minimizing repair or replacement.

Is a chair mat worth it?

Yes, an ES ROBBINS chair mat is a cost-effective way to prevent expensive floor repairs and improve everyday comfort by increasing the mobility of your rolling office chair.

Repeated movement of rolling chairs can cause significant wear, especially in high-use areas. Replacing damaged carpet or refinishing hardwood floors can be very expensive. An ES ROBBINS chair mat provides an affordable layer of protection while making chair movement easier and more efficient.

Adding an ES ROBBINS chair mat to your workspace is a simple upgrade you’ll notice every time you move— because better chair movement makes the workday feel easier.

How does a chair mat protect my floors?

An ES ROBBINS chair mat acts as a protective barrier between your chair casters (wheels) and the floor surface.

Without a quality ES ROBBINS chair mat, chair wheels repeatedly apply pressure to the same area, causing:

  • Carpet matting and fiber damage
  • Permanent carpet indentations and snags
  • Hardwood scratches, scuffs, and scrapes
  • Laminate and vinyl surface wear and deterioration
  • Tile surface, edge, and grout wear

An ES ROBBINS chair mat distributes your weight more evenly and absorbs the daily wear that would otherwise affect your flooring.

Can a chair mat make my office chair easier to roll?

Yes, an ES ROBBINS chair mat provides a smooth surface that reduces rolling resistance and allows your office chair to move more freely.

Many people struggle to move their chair across hard floors or carpet because the wheels drag or sink into the fibers and carpet pad. An ES ROBBINS chair mat eliminates this resistance, making it easier and more efficient to roll within your workspace to reach files, printers, and other work areas without unnecessary effort.

This improved mobility can also reduce fatigue and muscle strain during long workdays.

Do chair mats improve ergonomics?

Yes, ES ROBBINS chair mats can improve workplace ergonomics by reducing the physical effort required to move your rolling chair.

When chair casters (wheels) encounter resistance from carpet or uneven flooring, your body compensates through extra pushing, pulling, and twisting motions. Over time, these movements can contribute to physical discomfort and fatigue.

An ES ROBBINS chair mat promotes smoother chair movement, helping to create a more comfortable and efficient workspace.

Does a chair mat reduce fatigue?

An ES ROBBINS chair mat can help reduce fatigue by making rolling chair movement easier throughout the day.

Without an ES ROBBINS chair mat, moving a rolling office chair on hard floors or carpet often requires additional force from your legs and lower body. ES ROBBINS chair mats create a stable rolling surface that reduces effort and allows you to move naturally and efficiently throughout your workspace.

By simply adding an ES ROBBINS chair mat, users notice less strain during extended periods of sitting and working throughout the day.

Will a rolling office chair damage my floor without a chair mat?

In most cases, yes. Over time, repeated office chair movement can damage both carpet and hard floors.

Common signs of damage include:

  • Flattened or frayed carpet fibers
  • Worn carpet paths and snags
  • Scratches, scuffs, and scrapes
  • Discoloration and wear

The longer a chair is used without proper floor protection, the greater the likelihood of permanent damage. ES ROBBINS has a wide variety of chair mats available to help you shield and protect your floors.

Do chair mats protect hard floors such as wood, laminate and tile?

Yes, ES ROBBINS chair mats help protect wood, laminate and tile floors from scratches, scuffs, scrapes, and premature wear.

Office chair wheels can trap dirt and debris underneath them, which may act like sandpaper against hard floor finishes. An ES ROBBINS chair mat provides a protective layer that shields the floor surface while allowing smooth chair movement.

For hard floors, choose an ES ROBBINS chair mat specifically designed for hard surfaces.

Can a chair mat prevent carpet damage?

Yes, ES ROBBINS chair mats are one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent carpet wear caused by rolling office chairs and shield against spills and stains.

Daily chair movement can crush or snag carpet fibers, wear paths, and discolor high-traffic areas. An ES ROBBINS chair mat distributes weight evenly and provides a protective layer that prevents direct contact between chair wheels and carpet.

This protective barrier helps maintain the carpet’s appearance and extends its lifespan. Be sure to choose a chair mat specifically designed for carpet. ES ROBBINS carpet chair mats feature a cleated (studded) underside that helps hold the chair mat securely in place on carpeted surfaces.

How long do chair mats last?

The lifespan of an ES ROBBINS chair mat depends on the material quality, weight load, usage time, and floor type.

High-quality ES ROBBINS chair mats can last many years under normal office use. Lower-quality brand chair mats may crack, curl, or wear more quickly. Be sure to select a chair mat designed for your floor type to improve longevity and user experience. For example, thick carpets benefit from thicker, heavy-duty chair mats for optimal support and rolling performance.

Factors that affect longevity include:

  • Use on correct floor surface
  • Material quality
  • Weight load
  • Daily use time
  • Chair caster type (metal casters are not recommended)

Choosing a durable ES ROBBINS chair mat specifically designed for your floor type can significantly increase its lifespan.

Can a chair mat save me money?

Yes, an ES ROBBINS chair mat can save money by preventing costly floor repairs and replacements.

Replacing damaged carpet, refinishing hardwood floors, or repairing worn flooring can be expensive. An ES ROBBINS chair mat serves as a protective barrier that helps avoid these costs while extending the life of your floors.

For homeowners, renters, and businesses alike, a chair mat is a practical investment in floor protection.

Are chair mats only for offices?

No, ES ROBBINS chair mats are useful anywhere carpet or hard floor protection is needed. There are many areas where ES ROBBINS chair mats can provide essential floor protection you can trust.

Useful in a variety of areas such as:

  • Home offices
  • Corporate offices

  • Pet areas
  • Plant areas
  • Vanity and makeup areas
  • Children’s desks and activity areas
  • Baby high chair areas

What happens if I don’t use a chair mat?

Without an ES ROBBINS chair mat, your flooring is exposed to the risks of spills, stains, and constant wear from chair movement.

Using an ES ROBBINS chair mat helps preserve the look of your carpet or hard floors and provides a more attractive and comfortable workspace.

What type of chair mat do I need?

The best ES ROBBINS chair mat depends on your floor type.

For carpet protection:

To protect your carpet, choose an ES ROBBINS carpet chair mat with cleats or anchors on the underside to help keep the chair mat in place when in use. Do not use a smooth-backed chair mat designed for hard floors on a carpeted surface, it will not stay in place. Be sure to select an ES ROBBINS chair mat that is designed specifically for your carpet thickness (pile) for proper rolling support.

For hardwood, laminate, vinyl, or tile protection:

To protect your hard floors, choose an ES ROBBINS hard floor chair mat with a smooth backing that is designed specifically for hard floor use. Do not use a cleated chair mat designed for carpet on any hard floor surface.

Selecting the correct ES ROBBINS chair mat for your floor type ensures proper protection, stability, and performance.

What is the best chair mat for carpet?

The best chair mat for protecting carpet is an ES ROBBINS chair mat designed specifically for your carpet thickness (pile). The thicker the carpet, the thicker the chair mat needs to be for the best ergonomic rolling experience.

Big and tall users and those using their chair mat for extended periods of time (8 hours or more) should upgrade their chair mat to the next carpet pile thickness level for optimal support and rolling performance. For example, if your carpet is medium pile, select a high pile rated chair mat for big and tall or extended use time.

Flat Pile Chair Mats: These chair mats are designed for flat commercial carpets up to 1/8 inch thick with no carpet pad.

Flat to Low Pile Chair Mats: These chair mats are designed for thin carpeting up to 1/4 inch thick, including carpet pad depth.

How can I tell what my carpet depth is?

You can easily check your carpet depth at home using a paperclip as a measuring tool.

First, straighten one end of the paperclip.

Second, push the straightened portion of the paperclip down into the carpet until it goes through the carpet pad and reaches the subfloor.

Next, place your fingertip where the top of the carpet meets the paperclip.

Finally, pull the paperclip from the carpet while keeping your fingertip in place. Measure the distance between your fingertip and the end of the paperclip. This measurement is your carpet depth.

Match your carpet depth with the ES ROBBINS chair mat designed for a carpet pile thickness that is closest to your measurement. If you are between carpet pile depths, select the thicker carpet pile option for the best rolling performance. The thicker the carpet, the thicker the chair mat needs to be for the best ergonomic rolling experience.

How do I care for my chair mat?

ES ROBBINS chair mats are easy to clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth (moistened with water) to clean up spills, dirt or debris. Only use mild soap if necessary. Do not use harsh chemicals or cleaners. Be sure that your chair mat is completely dry before placing it on any surface. Avoid creasing or folding your chair mat.

What type of environment can I use my chair mat in?

ES ROBBINS chair mats are not to be used in an environment where moisture may be present beneath carpet or other flooring materials.

Do not use an ES ROBBINS chair mat in areas where it will be subjected to temperatures below 60° Fahrenheit (16° Celsius) or above 95° Fahrenheit (35° Celsius).

How do I unroll my chair mat?

Some chair mats are shipped rolled due to size or for quick economical shipping. Do not store your rolled chair mat after arrival. Upon receipt, begin the unrolling process so your chair mat can be placed on a flat surface.

ES ROBBINS chair mats are made of premium vinyl that becomes more flexible when warm. Cold temperatures make chair mats stiff. For best unrolling results, keep the chair mat in a warm environment (approx. 24 hours) prior to unrolling. Your chair mat must reach room temperature, at least 68° F (20° C) or warmer to unroll properly. Indirect heat sources such as sunlight or a warm room can help your chair mat relax.

Note: You may use a hair dryer as a gentle heat source to warm your chair mat faster. For hair dryer use, direct the warm air into the center core of the rolled chair mat for approximately 15 minutes. Unroll slowly while blowing warm air across the chair mat surface until flat. Follow safety guidelines provided by hair dryer manufacturer.

Once warmed, unroll slowly. You may help flatten your chair mat where needed by placing heavy objects (books, boxes, etc.) on any areas that remain curled. Allow the chair mat to rest and relax naturally to regain its flat shape.

NOTE: The chair mat will continue to relax and may take up to 72 hours to fully flatten. Warm environments help speed up the process. Do not expose the chair mat to extreme heat. High temperatures will damage the chair mat

ES ROBBINS offers a variety of chair mat edge styles such as Crystal, Beveled, and Straight.

Crystal Edge: A crystal (ramped) edge allows for a smooth transition from your floor to the chair mat surface. This edge style is useful if you are frequently rolling on and off your chair mat. The crystal edge has a crystal-clear finished appearance and is available on select ES ROBBINS carpet chair mats.

Beveled Edge: A beveled (ramped) edge allows for a smooth transition from your floor to the chair mat surface. This edge style is useful if you are frequently rolling on and off your chair mat. The beveled edge has a slightly matte finished appearance and is available on select ES ROBBINS carpet chair mats.
